Barry was the youngest of two sons of Henry John MacLaine Vicary (born 1867 in Spring Bay, Tasmania) and Lucy Amelia Page (born 1869 in Oatlands, Tasmania). Older brother Owen Henry MacLean Vicary served with the British Army as an officer in the Cold Stream Guards.
Barry was living is Sydney NSW in 1916 and was with Instructional Staff as a Soldier (Clerk) when he took his Discharge and enlisted in the AIF. Barry served as a Warrant Officer and Lieutenant (Service No: 13329) with Mechanical Transport. He was Discharged in December 1919.
In 1922 Barry married Marjorie Edith Zoe Pascoe (born 1893 in Unley Park, South Australia) at St Leonar'd in NSW. The couple moved to Brisbane, QLD where they raised their family, and Barry was initially a Manager, and then Agent for Davies and Coopers Coy in Ashgrove in Brisbane, QLD. Barry died in 1985 in Brisbane QLD and Marjorie in 1989.
