Born in Victoria but when his mother died in 1902 his father Dalmohy Gardiner remained in Sydney and Cedric went to live with Mr and Mrs J.C. Hough at Ashby on the north side of the Clarence River opposite Maclean, NSW. A Grafton newspaper item on 9 March 1910 describes Cedric as a lad breaking an arm when he fell from a milk cart he was driving. A subsequent item in the same newspaper on 13 September 1916 reported "All those who were acquainted with the bright little lad named Cedric Gardiner, who lived with Mr. & Mrs. J.C. Hough from childhood, will regret to learn there are fears of his death at the front." The Grafton Argus and Clarence River General Advertiser via trove.nla.gov.au.
