Trooper Spencer Roy Ward (Service No:750) enlisted in the AIF on 6 January 1915, and was attached to 11th Light Horse Regiment 1st Reinforcement on 23 June 1915 when he embarked with his Unit from Adelaide for the Middle East on board HMAT A30 Borda. Trooper Ward served with 11th and 9th Light Horse Regiments and 2nd Battalion Imperial Camel Corps in Alexandria, Cairo, Moascar, Anzac, Tel-el-Kebir, Sollum and Abassia, and was attached to 2nd Battalion Imperial Camel Corps on 4 October 1918 when he embarked on board HT Wiltshire for Adelaide, where he was Discharged on 13 December 1918. Trooper Ward's brothers (Harry and Arnold) also served in WWI, and his sons (Spencer Jnr and Ross) served in WWII.
Spencer was born in Thebarton, Adelaide, South Australia in 1891, fourth of ten children of William Henry ard (b1856 at Kangaroo Flat, Bendigo, Victoria) and his first wife Sarah Angelina Gidley (b1865 in Adelaide, South Australia). William (a Traveller) and Sarah married in Adelaide, and moved frequently - Strathalbyn, Petersburgh, Umberumberka via Broken Hill NSW, Mt Barker, and the Yorke Peninsula - where William was a Hawker/Traveller, Greengrocer, Shopkeeper and Agent.
Spencer was working in Edithburgh as a Miner when he enlisted in the AIF, and in 1915 in Adelaide married Susan Elizabeth Weekley (b1889 at Langhorne Creek, South Australia). Following his Discharge, Spencer and Susan lived in Edithburgh, Mile End and Port Adelaide, where they raised their family and Spencer was a Labourer and Carpenter and Joiner. Spencer died in 1960 and Susan in 1973.
