Samuel left Adelaide with the 43rd Battalion on board HMAT Afric on 9 June 1916. They proceeded to France on 7 July 1917. Samuel suffered shell gas poisoning in action on 26 May 1918 and had to be invalided to England for treatment at Horton War Hospital in Epsom on 1 June. On 6 November 1918 he was transferred to a training brigade in England prior to returning to Australia on the Nestor on 20 May 1919 and was discharged on 14 August.
