Biography contributed by Larna Malone

Walter Thomas Caldwell was born at Kamarooka, Vic., on 29 August, 1884, the son of John Thomas Caldwell and Agnes Amy Cail.    His father was a farmer and was also well known as a trainer of greyhounds.    Walter Thomas was always called 'Thomas', shortened to 'Tom'.

In January, 1915, his two youngest brothers enlisted in the AIF.   At the time of enlistment Albert Victor Caldwell and Arthur Joshua Stevenson Caldwell were both farmers in Kamarooka.

Walter Thomas Caldwell had left the farm and was working as a Dealer when he enlisted at Tenterfield, NSW, on 30th March, 1916.   He was 30 years & 7 months old.    He entered the training camp at Broadmeadows on 31 May, and was appointed to 20th Rfts/5th Bn.   He embarked for overseas on 11 September, 1916, and joined the 5th Battalion in France on 22 December.

On 15 May, 1917, he was accidentally injured during training and admitted to hospital suffering from Synovitis of the left knee.   He re-joined his battalion in November, but was admitted to hospital in December suffering from Internal Disarrangement of his Left Knee.   He remained in England and, in June, 1918, attendeed a Course of Instruction at 5th Division Signal School.   In September, 1918, he was again admitted to hospital, suffering from inflammation of his Left Knee Joint.

On 14th March, 1919, he married Ethel Annie Avery in the Parish Church, Mere, Wiltshire.   Ethel was 21 years old, the daughter of George Avery, a Mason.   'Thomas' Caldwell embarked for RTA on 26th July, 1919, and disembarked in Sydney on 19th September.   He was Discharged from the AIF M.U. on 29 October, 1919.
