Rank: Private
Unit: 49th Infantry Battalion
Yesterday, our group of volunteers ventured to Lutwyche Cemetery to restore the lettering to the civilian granite headstone of WW1 veteran Henry Jarman. We were also visited by a local butcher bird who was on the lookout for a worm or two as we cleaned the leaf litter from the top of Henry’s grave.
We received permission to do this voluntary work on Henry’s grave by his granddaughter with permission from Brisbane City Council.

𝐇𝐞𝐧𝐫𝐲 𝐉𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧 was born Henry Sellars on the 19th November 1886 in the town of Rosewood, Queensland to mother Mary Sellars. His mother married Edward George Jarman in 1889, and Henry took on the surname Jarman. Henry had two half-brothers and a half-sister. His half-brother Edward George Jarman, served in WW1 with the 2nd Light Horse Regiment.
On the 25th March 1916, Henry enlisted in Brisbane for service in WW1. He embarked from Brisbane per “Sean’s Choon” on the 19th September 1916, disembarking in Plymouth, England on the 9th December. The following day he marched in to the 13th Training Battalion. In January 1917, Henry was admitted to the Group Hospital, returning to the Training Battalion nine days later.
The following month, on the 15th February, Henry left from Folkstone, England and proceeded overseas to France on board “SS Victoria” where he joined the 49th Infantry Battalion.
Henry was on leave from France when he was admitted to the King George Hospital in England on the 28th June 1918 with influenza. He was discharged on the 5th July and proceeded overseas to France, rejoining his unit on the 19th July. He was returned to Australia on the 12th May 1919, embarking from England per “Port Napier”, and was discharged on the 13th August 1919.
On his return to Australia, Henry worked as a laborer in the Brisbane area, and had a daughter and son with Alice Henrietta Ford (née Cracknell). The family lived briefly at George Strret, Paddington before moving to Leckie Road, Kedron.
Alice passed away in Brisbane General Hospital in 1928, aged 32 years. Henry died five years later on the 4th January 1933 aged 46, and was buried with Alice the following day at Lutwyche Cemetery.
