Julius left Adelaide on the Afric on 7 November 1916, reaching Plymouth, England on 9 January 1917 and proceeded to France with the 32nd Battalion on 5 April. He received a gunshot wound to the right knee during action on 30 September and after treatment was able to rejoin his unit on 10 November. Julius was injured in a train accident at Boulogne on 16 December. He was gassed in action on 24 April 1918 which produced long-term suffocation attacks. Julius was wounded in action on a 3rd occasion when shot in the toe and ankle of his right foot on 28 June. A month was spent in Norfolk Hospital, England. It was then decided to have Julius invalided to Australia on the Port Melbourne on 5 July 1919. He disembarked on 18 August and was discharged as medically unfit on 25 September.
