Biography contributed by Adelaide Botanic High School

Cyril Haines was born on the 18th of June, 1891 in Kybunga, South Australia. Not much information is known about his life before he enlisted. His mother was Mrs Harriet Haines. He grew up in Perth, worked as a labourer, and became a Baptist. Haines' enlisted, with no prior military experience, on the 20th of July, 1915, and was documented to be 6'5.25 feet tall, weighing 196lbs(88.90kg).

Haines was placed into the rank of private in the A.I.F. and was part of the 32nd battalion during the First World War. His first embarkment was on the 18th November 1915 with his battalion from Adelaide, South Australia, on board the HMAT A2 Geelong. They disembarked at the Suez Port on the 14th December 1915.

While part of the 32nd Battalion, Haines’ service number was 102. However, on the 23rd of June 1916, he joined the British Expeditionary Force. Later that year, on the 6th of November, he was wounded by multiple gunshots to his left ear, left shoulder and right foot. The same day he was sent to the 38th casualty clearing station- the 4th General Hospital. A few months later, he was discharged on the 13th of March 1917, then reported to No 1 Command Depot. On the 2nd April 1917, he was transferred to the 70th battalion, in Wareham. However, while proceeding to the 69th battalion he was transferred back to the 32nd battalion on the 19th of September 1917.

On the 14th of December 1917, Haines marched into the Longbridge Deverill Overseas Training Brigade, England. A month later, on the 10th of January, he, with the rest of the 32nd battalion, embarked to France to take on strength, arriving on the 15th. Whilst in action on the 7th of February 1918, he received an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound to his right hand whilst picking up his bayonet. He was sent to the 14th Australian Field ambulance, and later that day to the 3rd Casualty Clearing Station, then to the 4th Army Special Hospital. Two months later on the 18th of April, the medical board at the 4th General Hospital deemed he was fit for duty. He re-joined his battalion later that year in October, until taking leave on the 8th of December.

Eight days after Haines’ leave, he re-joined the battalion. On the 21st January 1919, he departed England and returned to Australia where he was discharged on the 14th of July.

Twenty-one years later, at age 49 in October 1940, Cyril Haines again enlisted in the Australian Army as a Private with the service number W242797. He died on the 27th of October 1945 due to previous injuries, aged 54. He was buried in the Perth War Cemetery and Annex, located in Western Australia.
