Died on this date - 22nd September.....Private Robert Francis Lyons was born at Carlton, Melbourne, Victoria around 1899. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 8th January, 1917 as an 18 year old Cabinet Maker from North Carlton, Victoria.
Private Lyons embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Ballarat (A70) on 19th February, 1917 & disembarked at Devonport, England on 25th April, 1917. The Ballarat had been torpedoed on 25th April, 1917 and sank at the entrance to the English Channel. All the troops and all the members of the crew were saved.
Private Lyons was posted to 10th Training Battalion, No. 12 Camp, Durrington, Wiltshire on 26th April, 1917. He was temporarily attached for duty at Field Post Office, Durrington from 26th August, 1917.
Private Lyons was admitted to Fargo Military Hospital, Wiltshire on 20th September, 1917 after falling from a wagon onto the rifle of a sentry, while unloading mail & causing an injury to his buttock at 26 Camp, Larkhill. He was operated on twice.
Private Robert Francis Lyons died at 6.25 a.m. on 22nd September, 1917 at Fargo Military Hospital from wounds of Perineum.
An Inquest was held on 24th September, 1917 with Coroner F. H. Trethowan into the death of Pte R.F. Lyons on 22nd September, 1917. The jury returned a verdict of “Accidental Death”. (Full Inquest details in my research on the website)
Private Robert Francis Lyons was buried on 25th September, 1917 at Durrington Cemetery, Wiltshire where there are 140 other Australian WW1 Soldiers buried.
