Harold did his basic training with E Coy Base Infantry in March 1915, prior to being transferred to the Light Horse Brigade Training Battalion and was attached to the 14th Army Service Corps. His unit embarked Minneapolis on 20 October and disembarked in Egypt in December. Harold was appointed Lance Corporal at Gallipoli on 14 December. He was treated for jaundice at No.1 Auxiliary Hospital at Mudros on 27 December, rejoining his unit at Ismailia on 27 January 1916. His unit was sent to Marsailles, France on 20 March. He was on leave in England from 29 December 1916 to 12 January 1917 and was appointed 2nd Lieutenant in France on 25 January.
Harold proceeded to serve at AIF depots in England in late June. His next of kin detail is confusing, as the cover page of his service record lists his wife as being Helen Harrison. However, later it states that Helen is his mother. On 3 July, he married Moia Barker of Portsmouth at the Configuration Church in Hull. He was attached to the Australian Army Service Corps Training Depot at Perham Downs, England on 22 December. He briefly rejoined his unit in Belgium before being sent to Instructional School. After resuming from leave in September 1918, Harold served at Havre, France until June 1919, when he was attached to No.2 Camp at Sutton Veny. He was named, “deserving special mention” in Sir Douglas Haig’s dispatch of 16 March.
Leave for Harold was granted from 5 August to 19 August and on 23 August he embarked Anchises for return to Australia. He disembarked on 5 October and was discharged on 5 December 1919.
Harold was awarded the 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
After the war he lived at 72 Cedar Avenue, South Brighton, South Australia.
Harold Harrison died of natural causes on 24 March 1969, aged 82.
