William Hollington BONSEY was born in March, 1875 in Aston, Birmingham/Warwickshire, England

His parents were James East BONSEY and Ellen STEGALS who had married in 1874 in Aston

William often ran away from home starting when he was about 7 or 8 years old and on one occasion ended up in Wales - he eventually ended up arriving in Queensland on 12th December, 1889 from London on the ship JUMNA when he was 14 years old

He married Jessie DOYLE in 1905 in Coonamble, New South Wales - no known children - Jessie died on 30th December, 1951 in Subiaco, WA and is buried in Karrakatta Cemetery

He enlisted in Perth, Western Australia on 3rd January, 1916 & embarked from Fremantle on the HMAT Ulysses with the  28th Battalion, 10th Reinforcements

William was Killed in Action on 5th November, 1916 according to an eye witness from his Red Cross Wounded & Missing file although his death is recorded as being anywhere between 3rd & 6th November

He was killed at "The Maze", Guedecourt & his name is memorialised on the Villers Bretonneux Memorial, The Australian War Memorial, Somme Roll of Honour, Western Australia Botanic Gardens (plaque) and the State memorial in Mount Eliza in Western Australia - he was awarded the British War Medal & the Victory Medal
