90 years ago today, on the Friday afternoon of the 19th July 1935, Private George Joseph Kiem, 53rd Battalion (Reg No-3177), labourer from Allandale, New South Wales and Arnold Street, Mayfield West, N.S.W., father of two (Douglas & Nellie), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 43. PRESBYTERIAN-22NW. 59.

Born at Greta or Maitland (East or West?), New South Wales on the 1st July 1892 to Phillip, died 4.5.1935, 33 Bishopgate Street, Wickham, N.S.W., age?, buried at CATHOLIC 2-34. 101, and Ellen Kiem nee McGuigan, died 25.8.1939, 7 High Street, East Maitland, N.S.W., age?, mother of 5?, sleeping at CATHOLIC 2-34. 101, no headstone; husband of Helen Alice Kiem nee Dickson, married 1921, Petersham, N.S.W., died 1.2.1967, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 77, 32 years a widow, sleeping here, George enlisted on the 3rd October 1916 at Singleton, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A29 Suevic on the 11th November 1916.

Disembarked Devonport 30.1.1917.

Wounded in action - 15.11.1917 (GSW neck & back), 30.7.1918 (SW right leg).

Proceeded on sick leave to England from 8.9.1918 to 15.10.1918.

Proceeded on leave to England and France from 24.2.1919 to 16.3.1919.

Admitted to hospital 27.4.1919 (not stated).

Commenced return to Australia 2.6.1919.

George arrived home on the 19th July 1919, being discharged on the 28th August 1919.

Mr. Kiem’s name has been inscribed on the Cessnock War Memorial.

I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at George’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
