63 years ago today, on the 24th January 1962, Sapper Percy Daly, 5th Australian Broad Gauge Railway Operating Company (Reg No- 2789A), fireman from 100 Hay Street, Leichhardt, New South Wales and Newcastle?, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 68. ANGLICAN 3-209. 49.

Born at Toogong, New South Wales on the 11th April 1893 to Augustus, married school teacher from Merilla, via Goulburn, New South Wales, enlisted 11.6.1915, 3rd Battalion, Reg No-2501, died of pneumonia at sea en route to Egypt 2.8.1915, age 52, resting at Chatby Memorial, Alexandria, Egypt, and Edith S Daly, died?, from 12 Croydon Road, Croydon, N.S.W.; husband of Sarah Gladys Daly nee Wright, married 1914, Narrandera, N.S.W., died?, from Ferrier Street, Narrandera, New South Wales, Percy enlisted on the 3rd August 1916 with the 3rd Australian Pioneer Battalion at Sydney, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 9th November 1916.
Admitted to hospital 26.3.1918 (laryngitis), 10.4.1919 (nephritis, mild).
Granted leave to England from 5.10.1918 to 22.10.1918.
Commenced return to Australia 16.6.1919.
Percy arrived home invalided on the 4th August 1919, being discharged on the 27th September 1919.
Mr. Daly’s name has been inscribed on the Goulburn District Railway Employees Great War Honour Roll and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies at Percy’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
