Ross and his brother Harold both served in the 27th Battalion at Gallipoli during World War One. After the evacuation Ross proceeded to France with his unit in March 1916. He served in Belgium as a driver in August. In March 1917 Ross was hospitalised in France with tonsillitis, but was able to rejoin his battalion on 2 April. He fought in France for the remainder of the war. Ross returned to Australia on the Port Macquarie on 28 March 1919 and was discharged on 21 July. He died on 25 October 1941.
