Son of Mrs. M. A. Biggin (formerly Stewart), of Pingelly, Western Australia, and the late Magnus Stewart. William’s father died in Naracoorte, South Australia, when he was only four years of age.

His brother John Alexander Stewart served with the 8th Battalion Australian Commonwealth Horse, during the Boer War.

William had a half-brother who also died in 1916. His mother remarried a Henry Biggin and she had another eight children. One of these was 150 Pte. Hugh Richard Biggin 11th Battalion AIF, killed in action at Pozieres 20 August 1916, age 25.

William (Bill) Magnus Stewart was killed instantly by a German sniper at Messines, age 41. He was buried where he fell in an unmarked grave, by a Reverend, and its exact location was lost.
