Private Walter William Thompson (Service No:1150) enlisted in the AIF on 12 March 1917, having previously served for two months in 1915. Private Thompson was attached to 1 Veterinary Section when he  embarked from Melbourne for Glasgow on 4 August 1917 on board HMAT Themistocles A32. Private Thompson embarked for the RTA on 21 April 1918 on board A29 Suevic. He was attached to Australian Army Veterinary Corps when he was (medically) Discharged on 14 August 1918.

Born in 1888 in Melbourne Victoria, Walter was the youngest of three children of William Thompson (b1859 in Woodford, Victoria) and Lydia Furnell (b1863 in Melbourne, Victoria). William (a Grocer) and Lydia married in 1882 in Melbourne, Victoria.

Walter worked as a Groom in Wannon, Victoria where in 1912 he married Amy Ransom York (b1882 in Melbourne, Victoria) - Amy was a Shop Assistant in Hamilton, Wannon. Walter and Amy settled at Merino where Walter was a Groom - when he enlisted in the AIF in 1917 he listed his occupation as Hairdresser. Following his service in WWI, Walter and Amy lived in Melbourne where Walter was a Conductor before moving to Tatura where he was a Farmer. In 1920 he successfully applied for 140 acres of land at Tatura under the Returned Soldiers' Settlement Act 1917. Walter and Amy settled at Tatura where Walter was a mixed Farmer before moving to Melbourne. Amy died in 1945 and Walter in 1949.
