Arch was the third of five children (and only son) of John William Greaves (b1870 in Ballarat, Victoria) and Lillian Wooster (b1869 in Ballarat, Victoria. John (a Labourer) and Lillian (a Poet) married in Ballarat. In 1900 the couple and their two daughters had moved to Sydney NSW and in 1904 they moved to Western Australia, and lived in Wongan Hills, Merredin and Perth. John was a Labourer and Lillian a prolific Poet, published throughout Australia and New Zealand.
Arch was a Farm Labourer in Wongan Hills when he enlisted in the AIF in 1917 (stating his birthdate as 1898). His mother wrote ' I hereby give my consent to my son, Arch, serving his country in any military or other capacity, during her great need'. (National Archives Australia). Arch served (Private; Service No:7059) with the 27th and 28th Infantry Battalions and was WiA in France in 1918 (GSW to knee). He was Discharged in 1919.
Arch settled in Perth, WA following his Discharge, and in 1936 married Helen Louise Hegarty (b1912 in Northam, WA). Arch and Helen settled in Perth where Arch worked as an Income Tax Assessor (Clerk). He served with the VDC in WWII (Service No:W48119). Arch died in 1972 and Helen in 2010.
