Private Harry Harris (Service No:53835) enlisted in the AIF on 17 March 1917, and was attached to NSW Reinforcement 4 on 27 July 1918 when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney bound for England on board SS Field Marshall. Private Harris failed to return to his ship from shore leave in Durban, and on 17 September 1918 embarked from Durban for the continuation of the journey to London under arrest on board HT Marathon. Transferred to 7th Australian Infantry Battalion on 7 December 1918, Private Harris was granted leave for non military employment from 1 April to 1 July 1919 (Saddler with Follett & Co in Bishopgate, London). On 6 September 1919 Private Harris embarked from London on board HT Euripdes, and failed to return to ship on expiry of shore leave in Durban. Apprehended on 28 October 1919 and escorted to Cape Town, Private Harris embarked in detention on board HT Nestor on 20 November 1919 for continuation of journey to Sydney. Private Harris was attached to 7th Australian Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 8 January 1920. Private Harris stated in his Attestation Papers (NAA) that he had previously served in England with Middlesex Infantry Regiment.
Harry was born in London, England in 1889 to Harold Harris and Annie Sullivan - Harold was an ex-soldier who had been blinded through war injury.
Harry was working as a Labourer in Sydney, where in 1917, he married Florence (Florrie) Isabella Matthews (b1897 in Peak Hill, NSW). Following his Discharge from the Army in 1920, Harry and Florrie lived in Bowraville via Nambucca Heads, NSW where Harry was a Labourer. In 1924 Harry was listed with the Police as Missing, and by 1929 Florrie had remarried. Harry lived in Sydney, where he worked as a Labourer, Harry died in 1964 and Florrie in 1966.
