Cecil John Thoday was born in Kadina, South Australia on the 16th of May 1896. His father's name was Nathaniel Thoday. Cecil was 19 and 8 months when he enlisted in the army. Before enlisting he worked as a compositor, meaning he helped with the printing jobs. Cecil had no previous army experience before enlisting in the army. He enlisted on the 24th of February 1916.

During his military service he was repeatedly hosipitalised and once wounded in action, although he remained on duty. He safely returned to Australia in Heidelberg, Victoria until he died of natural causes. His grave can be found in Lilydale Lawn Cemetery.

Cecil made 3 friends during his time while being dispatched: (private) Arthur Leslie Edson who unfortunately died in action. (private) Richard Leishman and (private) Frank Edward Baker who fortunately returned safely back to Australia with (private) Thoday. The 4 of them met at the military hospital while recovering from wounds and illnesses
