Ernest was wounded in the head on the 6 August 1916 at Pozieres. He died 2 days later in a dressing station at Puchevillers and is buried there.
His brothers: 1364 Pte Albert John Smith, 51st Battalion, died of wounds, 5 July 1916.
2452 Pte Arthur Henry Smith, 51st Battalion,killed in action, 3 September 1916.
Ernest's father died in 1898 when he was only 10 years of age. His mother, Susannah Harrison must have remarried by the time he enlisted. She was living in Barrabup which was a small timber milling town located in the far south west of Western Australia. The town was basically dismantled between 1922 and 1925.
