Biography

Alfred James Wright is the father of my Grandmother Edith Alice Francis.- Kay Burro

Alfred was born in Payneham on the 18th of November 1894 to Robert Henry WRIGHT and Catherine nee REID.

He had six siblings.

He married Elsie Jane FOSTER on the 22nd of July 1921 at Renmark.

Very sadly, a week later he was reported as having died in a fire at Renmark on the 29th of July 1921 at the age of 26.

Military

Alfred (nicknamed Nugget) enlisted in the AIF at Keswick on 16 March 1915 and was given the service number 2056. He was attached to the 5th Reinforcements of the 10th Battalion.

He embarked for overseas service on 20 April 1915 and disembarked in Egypt.

He joined the 10th Battalion on the Gallipoli Peninsula on 8 July 1915 but was evacuated to Egypt on 18 August 1915 with measles. He re-joined the battalion at Mudros on Lemnos Island on 25 November 1915 as the battalion was preparing to return to Egypt for service at Gallipoli.

On 13 March 1916, WRIGHT was transferred to the 1st Pioneer Battalion and arrived in France on 2 April 1916. He took part in the battles of Pozieres and Flers in 1916 and the battles of Bullecourt and Passchendaele (Menin Rd, Polygon Wood and Broodseinde) in 1917. On 4 October 1917, he was awarded the Military Medal during the battle of Broodseinde. The following day, he was promoted to Lance Corporal and then Corporal on 14 December 1917. He is also recorded as having being wounded in action on the same day. In 1918, he took part in stemming the German Spring offensive (Hazebrouck) and the assault on the Hindenburg Line (Amiens and Lihos). He returned to Australia after the war on 21 May 1919 and was discharged from the AIF on 20 July 1919.
