Driver Ivo Henderson Howell (Service No:5575) served with the Cadets for three years and the Militia (17th Australian Army Medical Corps) for one year prior to enlisting in the AIF (with parental consent) on 14 July 1915. Gunner Howell was attached to 2 Field Artillery Brigade on 11 October 1915 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Egypt on board HMAT A71 Nestor. Driver Howell was attached to 1st Divisional Ammunition Column on 22 March 1916 when he embarked from Alexandria for Marseilles. On 4 October 1917, Driver Howell was WiA at Paschendale, when shrapnel from an exploding shell caused severe facial injuries - damaging both eyes (right eye was excised). Evacuated to hospital in England, Driver Howell embarked for Melbourne on 30 June 1918 on board HT Kanowna, and was hospitalised on arrival in Melbourne, undergoing numeorus surgeries '.... in spite of which he keeps a cheerful face' (Geelong Advertiser; 16 April 1919). Driver Howell was attached to 1st Divisional Ammunition Column at Discharge on 5 December 1920.
Ivo was born in Merton, Victoria in 1896, eldest of five sons of Richard (Jack) James Howell (b1859 in Geelong, Victoria) and Julia McIntyre (b1867 in Winchelsea, Victoria). Jack (a Farmer at Strathbogie) and Julia married in 1895 in Winchelsea, and settled in the Strathbogie district (Wandoomarook, Merton) and Moriac via Geelong, where they raised their family and Jack was a Farmer.
Ivo was a Teacher in Strathbogie when he enlisted in the AIF in 1915, and returned home to recover from his injuries. In 1921 Ivo was a Teacher in Melbourne where, in 1930 he married Vida Oughton Jones (b1896 in Hamilton, Tasmania) - Vida worked as a Typist in Melbourne from 1919. Ivo and Vida settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Ivo was a Teacher until his death in 1963. Vida died in 1965.
