Biography

Early Life

Horace was born 12 Apr 1889, the youngest son of George Richard Annells and Maria Radley nee Pimlott.

Education

He attended Prince Alfred’s College then commenced an Arts Degree at Adelaide University in 1907. Horace left University without completing his Degree.

Sport

In 1908 Horace played Intervarsity Football for the Adelaide University. See Team Photo below which is incorrectly labelled as HS Annells.

In July 1908 he played Horace his first A grade game for the Sturt Football Club (player number 109 - 9 League games) and continued to play at the senior level until SAFL matches were suspended due to WWI. “He was a brilliant high flyer who could play both ends of the ground.”

In 1908 he played football in a match between South Australia and New Zealand.

Marriage

On the 17th July 1915 Horace married Ruby Jones the daughter of Mr & Mrs JT Jones of Medindie. Tragically Ruby died suddenly on 23rd February 1917.

World War I

Horace enlisted in the AIF as a Private in the 9th Light Horse on 10th May 1917. He was 28.5 years old and a Salesman. Horace was described as being 6 foot 1 ¼ inches tall, 172 lbs, medium complexion with grey eyes and brown hair.

Horace embarked on board “HMAT A73 Commonwealth” on 2 November 1917 landing in Moascar, Egypt on 10 December 1917. All his service was in Egypt. He was promoted to Temporary Corporal on 7 June 1919 and Temporary Sergeant on 14 July 1919. He returned to Australia on the “Dunluce Castle” and was discharged on 19 September 1919.

Family Life

Horace married Nellie Florence (the daughter of W.O. Fenwick) on 14th May 1923 and they had one daughter.

Career

Horace was the Manager of Gollin & Coy from 1935 until at least 1944. Gillin and Coy were “merchants and importers”.

Other Activities

Horace was a member of the Defence Canteens Board from 1939 and in June 1940 Horace became the Controller of the S.A. Board of the Australian Defence Canteens Service. He was Chairman of the Employment committee of the Legacy Club of Adelaide from 1934. His recreations included tennis, golf and billiards. Horace was a member of the Naval and Military Club, the Kooyonga Golf Club and Legacy.

In 1944 he resided at 3 Aroha Terrace, Forestville, SA.

Death

Horace Annells of Black Forest, SA died aged 79 years on 8 July 1968, aged 79 years and is buried at Centennial Park Cemetery, South Australia, Weeping Rose Gardens TI 8.
