80 years ago today, on the Saturday afternoon of the 3rd March 1945, Sapper Thomas Llewellyn Williams, 9th Australian Field Company Australian Engineers (Reg No-7245), painter (Walsh Island Government Dockyard, Newcastle, N.S.W.), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 65. METHODIST 2 (PRIMITIVE) 14 NE. 7.
No death notice.
Born at Newcastle, New South Wales on the 30th November 1879 to Lewis, died 3.4.1908, Merewether, N.S.W., age?, buried at METHODIST 2 (PRIMITIVE) 14 NE. 7, from Frederick Street, Merewether, N.S.W., and Mary Ann (Anne) Williams, died 12.9.1913, Merewether, N.S.W., age 67, sleeping at METHODIST 2 (PRIMITIVE) 14 NE. 7, from Frederick Street, Merewether, N.S.W., Tom enlisted on the 28th February 1917 with the Tunnelling Companies, March 1917 Reinforcements at Sydney, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A32 Themistocles on the 4th August 1917.
Wounded in action - 19.6.1918 (SW right buttock).
Granted leave to England from 13.1.1919 to 27.1.1919.
Commenced return to Australia 4.7.1919.

Tom arrived home on the 19th August 1919, being discharged on the 19th September 1919.
Mr. Williams’s name has been inscribed on the Merewether (Mitchell Park) Memorial Gates.
Unfortunately, the headstone plaque for the William’s family has been destroyed, so I will place a cross adorned with poppies at the gravesite in remembrance of Tom’s service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
