20 Jun 1916: Embarked Private, 700, 38th Infantry Battalion, HMAT Runic, Melbourne
22 Nov 1916: Involvement AIF WW1, 700, 38th Infantry Battalion, GLW proceeded with 38th Battalion to Le Havre, France, and continues by train via Abbeville to Bailleul then marches to Armentieres. 38th Battalion enters trenches at left sub-sector Houplines area
27 Feb 1917: Wounded AIF WW1, 700, 38th Infantry Battalion, On 29th January 1917 400 troops from 38th Battalion (two companies) with similar group of two companies from 37th Battalion form a Special Raiding Battalion. Training conducted at Erquinghem Baths. 27 February 1917 – GLW wounded in action (gunshot wound left thigh) On “Z” night (27th February) the raiding force stages a 35 minute incursion of German lines. 16 killed from 38th Battalion with 45 wounded. Estimated 200 enemy dead.
4 Oct 1917: Wounded AIF WW1, 700, Broodseinde Ridge, 3rd August 1917 – GLW rejoined unit. 4th October 1917 – GLW wounded in action (gunshot wound left shoulder. 9th October 1917 – GLE evacuated to England on H.S. “Pieter de Coninck”, admitted Horton County War hospital, London. As the Passchendaele campaign continues, 38th Battalion goes on to suffer 62 per cent casualties.
11 Aug 1918: Wounded AIF WW1, 700, 38th Infantry Battalion, German Spring Offensive 1918, 21st February 1918 – GLW rejoined unit. Late March 1918 – 38th Battalion rushed south to meet the German Army’s Spring Offensive. 8th August 1918 – Entente offensive launched with 38th in reserve (the “Black day of the German Army”). 11th August 1918 – 38th Battalion attack on the village of Proyart. GLW wounded in action (gunshot wound neck/throat) 27th August 1918 – GLW admitted to Pavilion General Hospital, Brighton
12 Dec 1918: Discharged AIF WW1, Private, 700, 38th Infantry Battalion, George Leslie Wilson returned to Australia per HMAT “Nestor” (influenza).
