Thomas was the son of George Hooper Holden and Catherine Holden, of Fremantle, Western Australia.
His older brother, 2674 Pte. William John Holden 51st Battalion AIF, was killed in action in the Battle of Polygon Wood, Belgium, 26 September 1917, aged 23.
A younger brother, 3215 Private Albert James Holden, Camel Corps and 10th Light Horse Regiment, returned to Australia 10 July 1919.
