Walter Henry Montgomery was the son of William and Sarah
Montgomery (nee Collin). Upon completion of basic training, Walter
left Australia on HMAT A30 Borda on 23 June 1915, and embarked
for the Dardenelles on 31 July. He fought at Gallipoli from 4 August.
Contracting jaundice resulted in Walter being hospitalised at
Alexandrina and later at Heliopolis. The 10th Battalion, Walter’s unit,
was sent to France early in 1916, where he was wounded in action
at Rouen, on 23 July, sustaining a gunshot wound to the head which
required treatment at Newport Hospital in England. He rejoined his
unit in France on 24 September.
A severe case of trench feet led to Walter receiving medical
treatment in the field and later in hospital prior to rejoining the 10th
Battalion on 14 November. He was appointed Lance Corporal on 21
July 1917 and sent to Brigade School in England on 20 January 1918.
On 17 August Walter was reported as missing in action, when he
was actually absent without leave in England from 10 to 17 August.
He returned to Australia from Devonport per Kildonian Castle on 21
March 1919, disembarking at Adelaide on 4 May. Lance Corporal
Walter Henry Montgomery was discharged on 16 July.
