Muriel was the daughter of William Hinton and Mary Grance Hinton nee Beenson.

Muriel enlisted as a Staff Nurse with the Australian Army Nursing Service on 16.10.1916 and embarked from Australia per "Kanowna" on 11.5.1917.   Service in Egypt – Hospitals and 1st Field Ambulance Service. Promoted to Sister on 21.4.1919.  Returned to Australia per "Ulysses" on 23.7.1919 1919 On Duty and was Discharged on 19.9.1919.
