He is remembered on the Penicuik War Memorial  at the Jackson Street entrance of the George V Playing Fields.

James  worked with P &D Lyle, a Dalkeith printers and stationers, before emigrating to Australia. He joined the Australian Infantry and served in Egypt before moving to England. He returned to Dalkeith on leave.

James Darling Brodie was born on 21st March, 1886 at Galashiels, Scotland.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 31st January, 1916 as a 26 year old Salesman (Bookseller) from Melbourne, Victoria.

Acting Corporal Brodie, Service number 4381, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on RMS Orontes on 29th March, 1916.


Corporal James Darling Brodie was accidentally killed by a Motor Lorry whilst on leave on 15th July, 1916 at Dalkeith, Scotland as per the Finding of a Court of Enquiry.

He was buried in Penicuik Cemetery, Dalkeith, Midlothian, Scotland – Plot number L. 116 (Private plot belonging to his uncle – James Darling) and has a Private Headstone. His death is still acknowledged by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.


(The Service Record file does not record any information of where Brodie was posted once he left Melbourne. He would have been posted to a Training Battalion in England before being sent on leave)
