Died on this date – 20th March.... Private John Skyring Cross was born in 1898 at Gympie, Queensland, Australia. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 12th December, 1916 stating he was a 21 year old (actual age 18) Student from Mosman, NSW.

Private John Skyring Cross embarked from Sydney, NSW on HMAT Anchises (A68) on 24th January, 1917 with the 9th Reinforcements of 56th Battalion. Private John Skyring Cross was to be Acting Corporal with extra duty pay for voyage only from 28th February, 1917. He disembarked at Devonport, England on 27th March, 1917 & reverted to the rank of Private from that date.

Private John Skyring Cross was posted to 14th Training Battalion, Hurdcott, Wiltshire on 27th March, 1917.

Private Cross was A.W.L. (absent without leave) from midnight on 26th May, 1917 at Wilton, Wiltshire until apprehended by Military Police at 9.45 am on 27th May, 1917. He was awarded 14 days F.P. No. 2 (Field Punishment) & forfeited 17 days’ pay.

Private John Skyring Cross proceeded overseas to France on 23rd July, 1917 & joined 56th Battalion in France on 11th August, 1917.

Private Cross was sent sick to Hospital on 16th September, 1917 (cause not determined) & rejoined his Unit on 25th September, 1917.

Private Cross was hospitalised again on 27th September, 1917 with I.C.T. leg (inflammation of connective tissues) & reported to have boils on 5th November, 1917. He was invalided to England on Hospital Ship Pieter de Conick on 5th November, 1917 & admitted to Lord Derby War Hospital, Warrington, England. Private Cross was transferred to 1st Auxiliary Hospital at Harefield on 5th December, 1917 then discharged to furlo from 12th to 26th December, 1917 & was then to report to No. 1 Command Depot at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire.

Private John Skyring Cross was written up for an Offence while supposed to be posted at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire - A.W.L. (absent without leave) from 3.30 pm on 26th December, 1917 till 4 pm on 8th January, 1918. He was awarded 28 days F.P. No. 2 (Field Punishment) & forfeited 42 days’ pay.
Private Cross was medically classified on 11th January, 1918 as fit for Overseas Training Camp in two to three weeks. He was passed as dentally fit on 5th February, 1918 & was marched out to the Overseas Training Depot at Longbridge Deverill, Wiltshire on 6th February, 1918 – ready for return to France.

Private John Skyring Cross was sent sick to Rest Camp Hospital at Southampton on 4th March, 1918 then transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley, Hampshire, England on 6th March, 1918 with Cerebro Spinal Meningitis.

Private John Skyring Cross died at 9.45 pm on 20th March, 1918 at Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley, Hampshire, England from Cerebro Spinal Meningitis. He was buried in Netley Military Cemetery, Hampshire, England where 49 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
