He was the husband of Ellen Stapleton, nee Miles, whom he married in the Congregational Church, Wellingborough on 27th February 1917. His wife lived at 16 College Street, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire.
He served in France during the Great War under Service Number 248. He attained the rank of Corporal in the 23rd Battalion, 6th Infantry Brigade. He sustained a Gun Shot Wound to the chest.
In WWII, he served as a Private under Service Number V14923 with the Australian Army Ordnance Corps.
