Albert Killeen was born in 1886. He enlisted in the AIF in May 1916 and embarked shortly thereafter. He served in the UK with the Training Depot and as such received the single entitlement of the War Medal. In later years he enquired about the Victory Medal but was advised he was not entitled.
He was discharged from the AIF in April 1918 and enlisted in the Permanent Force, being allocated the number NP765 . He served continually in the permanent force (Royal Australian Garrison Artillery) until WW2, holding the special rank of Gunner Carter. During this time he suffered numerous injuries including falling off his carriage and cutting the tip off his thumb whilst on kitchen duties.
He was promoted to Bombardier at Hornby Battery, NSW. In October 1944 Bombardier Killeen sought his discharge due to age. It was deemed that he would be entitled to either a Meritorious or Long Service Medal and the award of the LSGC was determined in 1945. The LSGC was one of just 320 GVIR issues awarded.
