Biography contributed by CHERYL HAYES

"Patrick" McLoughlin was born Martin McLoughlin on 20 November 1887 at Moonan Brook, near Scone in the Upper Hunter Valley of NSW. He was known as Patrick, or "Paddy", to his family and friends.

His father's name was also Martin, who had emigrated from Thurles, Tipperary, Ireland in 1876, aged 29. His mother, Bridget McLoughlin (nee Hayes), emigrated from Birr, King's County (now Offaly) in 1864, aged 2, with her parents and 2 younger siblings.

Martin and Bridget married in February 1879.

Patrick was one of 14 children. He attended Moonan Brook school where his siblings were also educated, along with many cousins.

Moonan Brook was a thriving goldmining settlement; and Patrick's grandfather, Denis Hayes, was a carpenter who built the water wheel used in crushing the quartz to extract the gold.

Patrick's uncle, James McLoughlin, arrived in Australia in 1864 and was a pioneer of the Upper Hunter, NSW., east of Scone. McLoughlin is still a name synonymous of the area.

"Paddy" was a horseman and a popular young man in the district. His skills as a labourer and his knowledge of the land took him furthur afield, and at the time of his enlistment he was working in the Inglewood, Queensland, area.

Patrick McLoughlin; Service No: 4850; enlisted at Toowoomba on 20 September 1915. Records show that he was 6' 1 1/2" tall, with blue eyes, brown hair and of fair complexion. He weighed 184lbs. His father was his next of kin.

Following some basic training his battalion, 15th Reinforcements, 15th Battalion embarked on the "Commonwealth" for the Middle East. Three months later he sailed from Alexandria for England.

A month later her was fighting for King and country, in the fields of France, during the Great War. Patrick was reported missing on the 11 April 1917, and his death was ultimately confirmed. Patrick, a single man, had paid the ultimate sacrifice at tha age of 29 years and 7 months.

The news of his death brought much sadness to his parents, brothers, sisters, extended family and friends in the Moonan Brook valley and beyond.

Rest in Peace, Private (Martin) Patrick McLoughlin.
