James was born at Orange, NSW on 3 October 1883. He had some ten siblings and half siblings.
He joined the AIF at age 32 at Morphettville SA having travelled from Broken Hill on 19 August 1914. He was allocated service no. 829 and posted to the 10th Battalion.
He embarked with his battalion on 20 October 1914 for Egypt then to the Gallipoli Peninsula arriving at Gallipoli around the time of the landings in 1915. He was promoted to Lance Corporal. On 17 July 1915, he was admitted to hospital at Gallipoli suffering diarrhoea and from pleurisy.
He was transferred to a hospital in Egypt. On 1 October 1915, he returned to Australia and was admitted to Keswick Military Hospital. He was discharged as medically unfit on 8 November 1915. He was granted a military pension of £52 per annum.
He was awarded the 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
James died on 7 September 1947.
