102 years ago today, on the 4th February 1919 at 7.15 P.M, Private Edward Stamford Jones, 57th Battalion (Reg No-66227), apprentice ironworker from 53 Morgan Street, Merewether, New South Wales, died of illness (bronchopneumonia), age 19 years 8 months.

Born at 53 Morgan Street, Merewether, New South Wales on the 23rd June 1899 to Charles (died 1932) and Elizabeth Annie (died 1932) Jones nee Cooke, Edward enlisted May 1918 with the 20th N.S.W. Reinforcements at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Admitted to hospital 27.1.1919 (influenza, dangerously ill).
Edward is resting at Sutton Veny (St John) Churchyard, Sutton Veny, Wiltshire, United Kingdom. Plot 46 Row E Grave 24.

Mr Jones’s name has been inscribed on the Merewether (Mitchell Park) Memorial Gates and the Newcastle South Public School Roll of Honour (photo, unveiled on the 13th December 1918, 220 names now inscribed, 36 Fallen. Edward’s name has not been designated as having made the supreme sacrifice).
There is no memorial inscription on the family headstone to tell us of the supreme sacrifice of their son during The Great War, so on the 100th anniversary of Teddy’s death I placed a memorial cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the memorialised grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service. Older brother John Charles (35th Battalion, Reg No-2338, born 1893, died 1969, Newcastle, N.S.W.) also served 1st A.I.F.

MEREWETHER
Mr. and Mrs. C. Jones, of Morgan street, Merewether, have received word that their son, Private E. S. (Ted) Jones,. died in England from broncho-pneumonlia on February 4. Private Tones, who left Sydney on the 3rd October, 1918, was 19 years of age.

Died on this date – 3rd February … Edward Stanford Jones was born at Merewether, Newcastle, NSW on 23rd June, 1899 to parents Charles & Elizabeth Annie (nee Cooke).

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 13th May, 1918 as a 19 year old, single, Iron Worker from Merewether, NSW. He had served with 16th Infantry Citizens Forces for 1 year & 4 years with Senior Cadets.

Private Edward Stanford Jones, Service number 66227, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on SS Zealandic on 5th October, 1918 with the 20th (N) (New South Wales) Reinforcements & disembarked at London, England on 5th December, 1918.

Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.

On 5th December, 1918 Private Jones was marched in to 14th Training Battalion & allotted to Reinforcements of 57th Battalion.

He was sent sick to 1st A.D.H. (Australian Dermatological Hospital)  for treatment of VD at Bulford, Wiltshire on 7th December, 1918. Private Jones was transferred to Parkhouse for Convalescence from 16th December, 1918 to 3rd January, 1919 & marched in to No. 1 Command Depot at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire on same day.

On 27th January, 1919 Private Jones was admitted to the 1st Australian General Hospital at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire with Influenza. He was reported dangerously ill on 3rd February, 1919.

 

Private Edward S. Jones died at 7.15 p.m. on 3rd February, 1919 at the Military Hospital, Sutton Veny, Wiltshire, England from Broncho Pneumonia as per “Report of Death” form completed by Medical Officer Registrar.

(Note – Some of Private Jones’ Service Record forms have date of death as 4th February, 1919. Other forms have been amended to show the date of death as 3rd February, 1919. His CWGC Headstone has date of death as 4th February, 1919).

(The Australian War Memorial was notified on 3rd February, 2024 that his middle name should be Stanford & his date of death should be 3rd February, 1919. CWGC will be notified when AWM has made their decision).

He was buried in St. John the Evangelist Churchyard, Sutton Veny, Wiltshire, England where 140 other WW1 Australian Soldiers & 2 WW1 Australian Nurses are laid to rest.
