Pte. Norman was first wounded on 5/11/1916 due to a gunshot wound in the right shoulder. The 27th battalion was in action near Mountauban/Dernancourt attempting to hold Bayonet Trench when the unit was attacked by the Germans in large numbers. The casualties were heavy with 5 officers and 72 other ranks killed and 141 wounded over the course of three days action. (Unit diary 27th battalion Novemeber 1916.)

On the second occasion  L/Cpl.Norman was wounded on 4/10/1917 with the resulting gunshot wound fracturing his left leg. His unit was advancing toward its second objective near Westhoek,ANZAC  Ridge, Flanders.

This wound resulted in Norman being discharged as medically unfit for service on 31/1/1918 and he returned to Australia on HMAT Osterley on 4/4/1918.
