Son of John Henry and Agnes Harriet ASHTON, of Hay, New South Wales. Husband of Elizabeth ASHTON, of Crampton Lane, Wagga Wagga, New South Wales.

According to his Red Cross file he was wounded by a high explosive shell on the 2 September 1918 and was carried to the dressing station by his brother Arthur, who was also serving in the 5th Machine Gun Battalion. He was admitted to the No.2 General Hospital with a fractured femur and left arm. He died of wounds 2 days later. He was a married man, and almost 40 years of age. Another younger brother, Benjamin Ashton had been killed in action on Christmas Eve 1916.
