Sapper Smart was 23 and the son of Frances Jebb Smart of 112, Campbell St., Milson's Point, Sydney, New South Wales, and the late Charles Percy Smart.

He is one of three Australian soldier casualties of the Great War who are remembered on the Midleton World War I Memorial in Distillery Road, Midleton County Cork.
