"LATE PTE. GEORGE CYRIL VERCOE.

Mrs. E. Vercoe, of Robert street, Moonta, has been notified that her second son, George Cyril Vercoe, died in France of wounds on August 30. He enlisted in Western Australia in September of last year. Prior to going to the west the deceased was attached to the Union Bank at Moonta. He served afterwards in to branches at Kadina, Laura, Kingscote, and later at the Adelaide office, whence he was transferred to the western State. George Cyril Vercoe was born 12th July 1892, to John Penterwood Vercoe and Sarah Lillian Vercoe nee White; in Moonta South Australia, he has five sisters and two brothers.

He was educated at Moonta School of Mines, and on leaving school, was employed as a bank teller with the Union Bank, he was then transferred to Western Australia with the bank, He enjoyed tennis rowing and fishing.

George enlisted in Bunbury 13th September 1915 training at Blackboy Hill. On the 9th November 1915 he was allocated to the 13 reinforcements 11th Battalion. In December of that year, he went to NCO school at 22 Depot and appointed Corporal.

On the 18th May 1916 he disembarked Marseilles France from Alexandria Egypt, where he was appointed acting Sergeant at Etaples France, on the 2nd of August 1916.

He was transferred to 28th Battalion, in the Field and reverted to Private. The battalion bivouac and trained in various areas between Albert and the Pozieres region from the 2nd of August 1916.

It was on the 27th August 1916 the battalion relieved 15th Battalion in the trenches Northwest of Pozieres, it was on this day George was wounded in action.

He was admitted to 4th Australian Field Ambulance, then transferred to the 44th Casualty Clearing Station Puchevillers. It was here that George succumbed to his wounds.

Private George Cyril Vercoe, Service number 4352 of 28th Battalion, Died of Wounds on 30th August 1916. He was 24 years of age.

He is buried at Puchervillers British Cemetery, France and is remembered with honour.
