Died on this date – 22nd September…… Private Donald (Daniel) MacKenzie was born around 1886 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 28th August, 1914 under the name of “Daniel McKenzie”, stating he was a 28 year old Grocer from Neutral Bay, Sydney, NSW.

Private “Daniel McKenzie” embarked from Sydney on HMAT Suffolk (A23) on 18th October, 1914 with 2nd Infantry Battalion “A” Company. He embarked to join M.E.F. (Mediterranean Expeditionary Force) from Alexandria on “Derfflinger” on 5th April, 1915.

Private “Daniel McKenzie” was wounded while on the Gallipoli Peninsula on 8th August, 1915. He was dangerously wounded with a bomb wound to the right thigh & was transferred to No. 2 Stationary Hospital at Mudros on 16th August, 1915.

Private “Daniel McKenzie” was invalided to England on 27th August, 1915 on board the Hospital Ship “Cawdor Castle.”

Private “Daniel McKenzie” died on 22nd September, 1915 at Military Hospital, Devonport, England from wounds received in action at Gallipoli.

He was buried in North Merchiston Cemetery, Edinburgh, Scotland in private ground – Plot number D. 856 and has a Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone.
