Son of Henry Oakes and Elizabeth Mary Oakes nee Samson of Fullerton Estate, SA. Brother of Reginald Noel Oakes who returned to Australia on 17 July 1919 having served with the 4th Field Artillery Brigade.
Commenced return to Australia on 5 March 1919 aboard HT Nevasa disembarking on 18 April 1919
