88 years ago today, on the Monday morning of the 1st February 1937, Private John Dawson Thomson, 2nd Battalion (Reg No-51192), clerk (Railway Department), from 24 Bulwer Street, West Maitland, New South Wales and 34 High Street, Waratah, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 58. PRESBYTERIAN-24NW. 14.

Listed on Sandgate Cemetery database as THOMPSON.

Born at West Maitland, New South Wales on the 1st January 1879 to John and Margaret Ellison Thomson; husband of Susan Elizabeth Thomson nee Roulston, married 1922, East Maitland, N.S.W., died 4.5.1927, Newcastle Hospital, N.S.W., age 40, sleeping here - a tragic story, John enlisted on the 31st January 1918 with the 1st to 15th (NSW) Reinforcements at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board SS Feldmarschall on the 19th June 1918.

Admitted to hospital 22.10.1918 (influenza).

Commenced return to Australia 6.7.1919.

John arrived home on the 26th August 1919, being discharged on the 12th September 1919.

Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment, returning home, etc.

Did not serve in a theatre of war, therefore was not granted Victory Medal.

Mr. Thomson’s name has been inscribed on the West Maitland Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour. A member of the Waratah Masonic Lodge No. 170, U. G. L. of N.S.W., name not inscribed on Honor Roll. Name not inscribed on the West Maitland Superior Public School Roll of Honour or the West Maitland and District Roll of Honor or the NSW Government Railways and Tramways, First World War Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at John’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
