J. K. ADEY joined the A.I.F. as Captain in A.A.M.C. on 8th January and embarked on 14th May 1915 attached to 6th Field Ambulance. He arrived at Anzac on 4th September 1915, and after the Evacuation was promoted to Major attached to 5th Field Ambulance on 6th February 1916.

On 23rd March he arrived in France and took part in Battle of Pozieres. In 1917 he took part in actions at Bapaume, Bullecourt and
Ypres, and was then appointed D.A.D.M.S. to Australian Camps in England .

On 1st May 1918 he was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in command of 3rd Aust . C.C.S., and retained that command until after Armistice , when his unit under his command was from December 1918 to February 1919 part of the Army of Occupation at
Cologne in Germany .

He was awarded O.B.E. on 3rd June 1918, and this honor was transferred to the Military division of the order on 15th April 1919. On 13th August 1918 his name was gazetted as having been brought to the notice of the Secretary of State for War for valuable
services rendered in connexion with the war. He was Mentioned in Despatches in "London Gazette " of 11/ 7/19. He returned to Australia in May 1919 and his appointment was terminated on 13th July 1919.
