George was the youngest of six children of William David Roberts (born 1840 in Lancashire, England) and Martha Cartwright (born 1849 in Lancashire, England). William was an Able Seaman when he arrived in Sydney, NSW in 1860 on board the Hochelaga. Martha immigrated in 1859 with her parents, arriving in Sydney, NSW on board the Caribou. William - a Mariner - married Martha in 1876 in Rozelle, Balmain, Sydney where they settled and raised their family. William worked as a Mariner, and died in 1919.
George was an Electrical Engineer in Balmain, Sydney, NSW when he enlisted in the AIF in September 1916. He served with 1st Cavalry Division Signals Squadron (Service No:1751) as a Private, Sapper and Corporal. He was Discharged in July 1917. Brothers David Thomas Roberts (Farrier, Service No:893) and William Owen Roberts (L/Corporal. Sergeant, Service No:167), and Brother-in-Law Colin Herwald Dickson (Driver, Service No:10619) also served in WWI.
George returned to Sydney and was working as an Electrical Engineer in 1929 when he married Elsie May Porter (born 1906 at Pittsworth on the Darling Downs in QLD). George and Elsie settled at Rose Bay in Sydney, NSW where George worked as an Engineer. He died in 1971 and Elsie in 1999,
