Private Frederick Andrews (Service No:4730) enlisted in the AIF on 30 October 1915 with 20 Depot Battalion, and was attached to 5th Infantry Battalion on 7 March 1916 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Gallipoli on board HMAT A18 Wiltshire. Transferred to 60th Infantry Battalion at Duntroon Plateau on 20 April 1916, Private Andrews then served with 60th Infantry Battalion on the Western Front (France and Belgium). WiA (GSW feet) for the first time in the Battle of Fromelles on 19 July 1916, Private Andrews was WiA (GSW back) on the second occasion in France on 29 June 1918, and embarked from England for Melbourne on 2 January 1919 on board HT Karmala. Private Andrews was attached to 60th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 1 April 1919.
Fred was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1897, youngest of six children of George (Henry) Andrews (b1852 in London, England) and Louisa Kenrick (nee Cook; b1859 in London, England). Henry and Louisa married in Adelaide, South Australia in the early 1880s, and had moved to Melbourne by 1886. The couple settled in Richmond in Melbourne where they raised their family and Henry worked as a Labourer and Horse Driver.
Fred worked in Melbourne as a Labourer and served three years with Senior Cadets before enlisting in the Army in 1915. Following his Discharge, Fred returned to Melbourne and in 1919 married Elsie May Grigg (b1895 in Melbourne, Victoria). Fred and Elsie settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Fred worked as a Labourer and Tanner until his death in 1960. Elsie died in 1985.
