Pte James Charles embarked from Sydney on 12 April 1916. He was killed in action at Flers, France, on 14 November 1916. He was 26 years of age. He was reported missing and according to his Red Cross file his body was found on the battlefield during February 1917. His remains were buried at the spot and his grave was marked by an upturned rifle. However, his grave was subsequently lost. He was not officially reported as killed until October 1917. James Charles was one of four brothers who served. 174 Pte Leslie Stuart Charles, 31st Battalion AIF, was killed in action at Fromelles, France, on 20 July 1916, aged 22.

165 Pte Thomas Denis Donovan Charles, also 31st Battalion, returned to Australia on 27 July 1917, with an injured knee. 156 Pte. David Samuel Charles 31st Battalion, returned to Australia during 1919.

They were the sons of John and Phoebe Charles of Inglewood, Queensland. The father, John, died in 1909, and the mother, Phoebe, passed away in early 1916. A sister received all of their effects and medals.
