William worked at the wool stores to support his family and when his son and namesake was just 1 yr old he enlisted in the army as a Private in May 1916, (Service Number #230).
At the time of enlistment for WWI he was a carrier, standing just 5' 3/4" tall with blue eyes and a fair complexion. He was living at 314 Neil Street (Ballarat). His next of kin is listed as his wife Violet S. Stephens, who was living with his parents at 75 Barclay Street (Ballarat East).
William served in and survived action in Belgium and France being promoted through the ranks to Coy. Sergeant Major when finally discharged in May 1919 when he returned to his wife and son who would now be 4 years old.
