Alfred Egbert Dunn was born on Broadmeadows Victoria in 1872, making him 36 when he enlisted at Melbourne in June 1915.
He embarked for the Middle East with the 11th Reinforcements in October 1915, missing Gallipoli service. He underwent training in Egypt before his departure for France in March 1916 where the 5th Battalion were first in action at Fleurbaix, followed by Messines, Pozieres and Ypres.
Dunn was involved in the 1917 actions at Bapaume, Noreuil, Bullecourt, the Somme – followed by Menin Road, Broodseinde and Passchendaele. 1918 was just as busy, including Rosieres and Lihons. When hostilities ceased he moved to Bohain and then Charleroi.
He returned to the United Kingdom on 24 January 1919, embarking for Melbourne from Southampton in March. He was awarded a soldiers settlement grant in 1923 and died at Cheltenham, Victoria in July 1968.
