Private Herbert William Floate (Service No:4102) had served with the Militia (71st Regiment) prior to enlisting in the AIF at Ballarat, Victoria on 22 July 1915. Private Floate was attached to 23rd Infantry Battalion when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for England on 7 March 1916 on board HMAT A18 Wiltshire. Hospitalised with Influenza at Tidworth Military Hospital in August 1916, Private Floate was in France with 23rd Infantry Battalion when he Died of Wounds on 9 November 1916.
Bert was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1895, third of eleven children of William Thomas Floate (b1863 at Mt Gambier, South Australia) and Mary Ann Shone (b1869 at Mt Gambier, South Australia). William was a Miner in 1891 when he and Mary married in Warracknabeal, Victoria. They lived in Warracknabeal, Melbourne, Ballarat and Geelong where they raised their family and William worked as a Miner, Labourer and Dealer.
Bert worked as a Miner at Creswick via Ballarat before enlisting in the Army. His effects, returned to his parents where a cufflink, 2 franc note, 6 coins, pocketbook, photos, a letter and wallet.
