Chaplain's Appreciation

THE LATE PRIVATE J. L. CUMMINS
CHAPLAIN'S APPRECIATION.
Mrs A. Cummins, Tatura, is in receipt of a letter from the Rev I. H. Raverty, Chaplain second Australian Pioneers, France, who writes concerning the death of her son:
—"It is with deep regret I write concerning the death of your son, Private J. L. Cummins, and offer you my sincerest sympathy. My own brother having been killed in the same battle enables me to understand your feelings somewhat. They are noble men. I use the present tense because they still live, though in a different sphere. To me their death is the culminating point of a long sacrifice, which commenced on enlistment. They laid their all on the altar of their country's need, and God accepted their offering in the service of humanity. The road which they completed under shell fire enabled us to rush our guns through after the advance and saved thousands of lives. Your son's death together with many
comrades was the price paid. Let us not mourn as without hope. A nobler death they could not die, and I believe that in the dawn of eternity our Lord shall pronounce to them, Well done, good and faithful servant."
